ASTM B209 5083-H111 Aluminum Bar

GNEE supplies 5083-H111 aluminum bar in round, square, flat, and hexagonal sections. 5083 is a marine-grade Al–Mg alloy (AlMg4.5Mn0.7) that is non-heat-treatable, welds well, and resists seawater and industrial atmospheres. In the H111 temper it keeps good formability while giving slightly higher strength than the O condition, which makes it a practical choice for welded structures, marine work, and pressure-containing parts. Standard sizes are stocked and cut or drawn to order, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates on every lot.

What is 5083-H111 aluminum bar

5083 is a 5xxx-series alloy with about 4.5% magnesium and 0.7% manganese. It is strengthened by strain hardening (cold work), not by heat treatment, so its properties come from the temper rather than a solution treatment. H111 is a strain-hardened temper with no further treatment - it sits just above the soft O condition and keeps most of the alloy's ductility. The bar is produced by extrusion (round, square, hex) or by cold drawing and rolling (bright round, flat). Because 5083 does not lose much strength at low temperature and keeps good toughness, it is widely used in cryogenic and marine service.

Chemical composition of 5083 aluminum bar

Element Content (wt%)
Silicon (Si) ≤ 0.40
Iron (Fe) ≤ 0.40
Copper (Cu) ≤ 0.10
Manganese (Mn) 0.40 – 1.00
Magnesium (Mg) 4.0 – 4.9
Chromium (Cr) 0.05 – 0.25
Zinc (Zn) ≤ 0.25
Titanium (Ti) ≤ 0.15
Others each ≤ 0.05
Others total ≤ 0.15
Aluminum (Al) Remainder

Composition follows EN 573-3 / ASTM B209 for alloy 5083; the chemistry is the same across bar, plate, and tube forms.

Mechanical properties of 5083-H111 aluminum bar

Property Typical value
Tensile strength (UTS) 275 MPa (min)
Yield strength (Rp0.2) 125 MPa (min)
Elongation (A50 mm) 12% (min)
Hardness ≈ 75 HB

Values are typical for the H111 temper per EN 755-2 / ASTM B221 and are given as a guide; the exact lot values are listed on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC. The O temper gives similar strength with a little more elongation; H112 is slightly higher in yield. 5083 keeps useful strength down to cryogenic temperatures, which is why it is specified for LNG and low-temperature tanks.

Dimensional tolerances follow ASTM B221 / EN 755-3 for extruded bar and ASTM B211 / EN 754 for cold-drawn (bright) bar. Tolerances are diameter-dependent; indicative values for extruded round bar per EN 755-3 normal class are listed below and confirmed against your drawing:

Diameter (mm) Indicative tolerance [To be confirmed]
≤ 25 ± 0.30 mm
25 – 50 ± 0.45 mm
50 – 100 ± 0.70 mm
100 – 200 ± 1.20 mm
200 – 500 ± 2.00 mm and above

Straightness is held to a typical ≤ 1.5 mm per metre. Tighter (precision / bright-drawn) tolerances are available on request; send the required tolerance and we confirm tooling and feasibility. All sizes above the listed ranges are quoted case by case.

Applications of 5083-H111 aluminum bar

Marine and shipbuilding: hull structures, decks, superstructures, hatch coamings, and seawater piping where corrosion resistance matters more than peak strength.

Pressure vessels and cryogenic tanks: LNG and low-temperature storage where 5083 keeps toughness below zero.

Rail and road transport: vehicle bodies, trailer frames, and structural members needing a good strength-to-weight ratio with weldability.

Welded fabrications: frames, brackets, and assemblies built by welding rather than machining from solid.

General engineering and tooling: jigs, fixtures, mould and model making where stable, low-stress material is useful.

Automotive and component parts: chassis and body parts where weight saving and corrosion resistance are required.

Welding and fabrication of 5083-H111 aluminum bar

Welding. 5083 welds well with MIG/TIG using 5xxx fillers - 5183, 5356, or 5556. Do not use 4043 filler on 5083: its higher silicon lowers post-weld corrosion resistance and can cause cracking in magnesium-rich weld metal. Strength in the heat-affected zone stays close to the parent metal.

Forming and machining. H111 and O tempers form and bend well; bend radii should be wide in the H tempers. Machinability is fair and improves in the harder tempers. Annealing is done around 345 °C if full softening is needed.

Corrosion care. 5083 resists seawater and most atmospheres, but it is anodic to steel and copper. At mixed-metal joints use dielectric isolation washers or sleeves to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Temperature. 5083 keeps strength and toughness at low temperature (down to cryogenic service) and is not intended for sustained high-heat duty; for hot-service parts, discuss the condition with us before specifying.

FAQ

1. What is the difference between 5083-H111 and 5083-O?

Both are soft, weldable tempers. H111 is strain-hardened slightly beyond O, giving a little more strength while keeping most of the ductility. For heavily formed or bent parts, O is the safer choice; for welded structures needing a bit more stiffness, H111 works well.

2. What sizes of 5083 aluminum bar are available?

Round bar runs 5–420 mm extruded and 5–350 mm cold-finished (drawn); square bar 6–150 mm; flat and hex sizes are available but quoted case by case. Length is 1000–6000 mm, longer by request. Larger diameters are [To be confirmed] - send your drawing.

3. Is 5083 aluminum bar weldable, and which filler do I use?

Yes. Weld with 5183, 5356, or 5556 filler. Do not use 4043 on 5083 - its silicon content lowers corrosion resistance and can cause cracking in the weld. Post-weld strength stays close to the parent metal.

4. What tolerances can you hold on 5083 bar?

Tolerances follow ASTM B221 / EN 755-3 for extruded bar and ASTM B211 / EN 754 for drawn bar, and are diameter-dependent (indicative extruded values: ±0.30 mm up to 25 mm, increasing to about ±2.00 mm at 420 mm). Tighter bright-drawn tolerances are available - send the required tolerance and we confirm against your drawing.

5. Can 5083 bar be anodized?

Yes, but 5xxx alloys anodize to a greyer, less bright finish than 6xxx. For a decorative bright look, powder coating or a polished mill finish is often preferred; anodizing is still used where extra surface protection is wanted.

6. What certificate comes with the bar?

EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate is standard with every lot, listing chemistry and mechanical results. EN 10204 3.2 and third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
