This page describes the product as specified by the supplier and separates verified parameters from claims that need documentation. To request a quote, send the temper, thickness, width, surface finish, quantity and required standard. Request a quote for 1235-O aluminum foil.
1235-O Food-Grade Aluminum Foil: Product Overview
1235-O aluminum foil is a fully annealed aluminum foil supplied across a thickness range of 6–200 μm and a width range of 200–1800 mm. The foil has one bright side and one matte side. It is intended for household foil and converting applications, subject to the requirements of the end use and the customer's processing conditions.
Because 1235 is a commercially pure alloy (aluminum minimum 99.35%), it offers consistent formability and an effective barrier against light, moisture, gases and odour. These are the reasons it is commonly chosen as a base material for flexible packaging, lamination and household wrapping rather than for structural or load-bearing use.
Chemical composition of 1235 food-grade aluminum foil
1235 is a 1xxx-series, non-heat-treatable alloy defined by its high aluminum content and tightly controlled impurities. The limits below follow EN 573-3 / GB/T 3190 and are consistent with the ASTM B479 foil specification.
| Element | Content (wt%) |
|---|---|
| Aluminum (Al) | ≥ 99.35 (balance) |
| Silicon + Iron (Si + Fe) | ≤ 0.65 |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.05 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 0.05 |
| Zinc (Zn) | ≤ 0.10 |
| Other elements, each | ≤ 0.03 |
Composition follows EN 573-3 / ASTM B479 for alloy 1235. Low impurity levels keep the foil chemically stable and suitable for food-contact base material.

Mechanical properties of 1235 food-grade aluminum foil
1235 is strengthened by cold working, not by heat treatment. In the O temper it is at maximum softness and formability. The figures below are typical reference values; foil properties are gauge-dependent and the exact lot values are stated on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
| Property | Typical value (O temper) |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, ultimate | 75–105 MPa (sheet reference); foil gauges often reported ≥ 60 MPa |
| Yield strength (0.2%) | 35–55 MPa (sheet reference) |
| Elongation | ≥ 3% (sheet reference); foil gauges often reported ≥ 12% on 2-inch gauge |
| Density | 2.70 g/cm³ |
Exact mechanical values depend on thickness and annealing; confirm against the MTC for the specific gauge ordered.
Surface quality and converting performance of 1235-O aluminum foil
Bright and matte sides. The two sides differ in appearance from the rolling process: one side takes a brighter finish, the other a matte finish. This is a normal foil surface feature and, by itself, does not determine food-contact safety.
Surface cleanliness. The supplier states a dry, oil-free and solvent-free surface. This is a strong claim and should be backed by process control or a test report; confirm the inspection method with GNEE before relying on it for sensitive converting.
Wetting tension. A "Grade A" wetting-tension surface is stated, but the numerical value, unit and test standard are not given. For printing, coating or lamination, request the wetting-tension number, test method, test frequency and the basis for the oil-free / solvent-free claim.
Roll consistency. Practical acceptance items include roll-end squareness, winding tension uniformity, joint count and edge quality. Confirm these acceptance points with GNEE for your slitting and converting line.
Applications of 1235-O food-grade aluminum foil
Household aluminum foil - wrapping, covering and short-term food storage at home.
Food wrapping and packaging - flexible packaging where a moisture, light and gas barrier is needed.
Foil converting and slitting - rewinding and slitting into narrow widths for downstream users.
Printing, coating and lamination - where the surface specification (bright/matte, wetting tension) suits the process.
Pharmaceutical and blister backing - used as a barrier layer in blister and sachet constructions.
For any specific food-contact condition, confirm applicability and the relevant compliance documentation with GNEE before committing to production.
1235 vs 2014 aluminum alloy comparison
1235 and 2014 belong to different alloy families and are not substitutes: 1235 is a pure 1xxx foil alloy for packaging, while 2014 is a high-strength 2xxx (Al-Cu) structural alloy for aerospace and heavy engineering. The table is included to show how the two differ, not to suggest one replaces the other.
| Property | 1235 (1xxx, pure) | 2014 (2xxx, Al-Cu) |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy series | 1xxx - commercially pure aluminum | 2xxx - aluminum-copper, heat-treatable |
| Main alloying element | Al ≥ 99.35% | Cu 3.9–5.0% (principal), with Mg / Si / Mn |
| Strengthening method | Cold working (non-heat-treatable) | Precipitation hardening (heat-treatable) |
| Typical forms | Foil, thin coil, sheet | Plate, sheet, extrusion, forging |
| Density | ≈ 2.70 g/cm³ | ≈ 2.80 g/cm³ |
| Typical strength | 1235-O UTS 75–105 MPa (sheet reference) | 2014-T6 UTS 440–510 MPa (typical reference) |
| Elongation | ≥ 3% (sheet) / ≥ 12% (foil gauge) | ≥ 10% (T6 reference) |
| Food contact | Suitable as high-purity base material | Not used for food contact (copper-bearing) |
| Typical use | Food / pharma packaging, lamination | Aerospace structures, forgings, heavy parts |
| Supply standards | ASTM B479, EN 546, GB/T 3198 (foil) | Plate / sheet: ASTM B209; extrusion: ASTM B221; forging: ASTM B247; EN 485, ISO 209 |
| Export note | General - no special control | On China's dual-use control list - dual-condition triggered (only when UTS ≥ 460 MPa @20°C AND the form is a tube >75 mm OD or a solid cylindrical bar); as plate / sheet / forging / extrusion it is generally not caught. Listed here only to contrast families. |
Values shown for both alloys are typical reference figures from published alloy data; product-specific values depend on temper, form and gauge and are confirmed by the mill test certificate.
