What is 1040 Aluminum

The same alloy has different codes in different naming systems. Knowing all of them helps you match the spec to the right product on any datasheet or purchase order.

Minimum aluminum: 99.40%. Major impurities are Fe (≤ 0.50%) and Si (≤ 0.30%). 1040 sits between 1050A (Al ≥ 99.50%) and 1100 (Al ≥ 99.00%) in the 1xxx purity range.

Physical properties (typical): density ≈ 2.71 g/cm³; melting range ≈ 646–657 °C; electrical conductivity ≈ 61% IACS; thermal conductivity ≈ 230 W/(m·K). Non-magnetic.

Values are typical ranges from GB/T 3880 and 1xxx-series reference data. They are not for design. Mill figures per heat are reported on the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) shipped with each lot.

1040 is non-heat-treatable. It is strengthened only by cold work. Tempers ending in T (T3, T6, T8, T351, T851, etc.) are not applicable to 1040 - these designations belong to 2xxx, 6xxx, and 7xxx series alloys.

What 1040 Aluminum Coil Is Used For

1040 is not a high-strength structural alloy. It is the right choice when you need easy forming, clean surface finish, and good conductivity at a low cost. Typical buyers use it for:

Chemical and food processing equipment - tanks, vessels, piping liners

Heat exchangers and cooling fins - thermal conductivity 230 W/(m·K) is one of 1040's main advantages

Electrical parts - bus bars, transformer windings, capacitor shells, conductor strip

Deep drawing and stamping - cookware, bottle caps, license plates, nameplates

Roofing and architectural trim - flashings, gutters, soffits, facade panels

Packaging and insulation - aluminum foil, container stock, vapor barriers

1040 is not used for aircraft structure or ship hulls. Those applications need 2xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx, or 7xxx series alloys. We supply those grades too, but they are different product pages.

 

 

Manufacturing and Surface Treatment

1040 coil is produced by hot rolling and cold rolling. Mill finish is the as-rolled surface; buyers who need further finishing choose from:

Mill finish - as-rolled, slight surface variation

Anodized - for hard, wear-resistant surface; clear or colored

Color coated (PVDF / PE) - for roofing and architectural use; 20–25 µm coating

Embossed - stucco or diamond pattern; improves rigidity and slip resistance

Polished mirror / brushed - for decorative and reflective applications

PVC film laminated - temporary protection during forming

Packaging and Shipping

Each coil is wrapped in moisture-proof kraft paper and PE film, then steel-band strapped on a wooden pallet. Coil orientation is eye-to-sky or eye-to-wall depending on container loading. We can also pack to your own spec if your freight forwarder or warehouse needs a different setup - please tell us at the time of order.

Standard 20' GP container loads approximately 20–22 tons of 1040 coil. Standard 40' HQ container loads approximately 25–28 tons. Loading is at Tianjin or Qingdao port; other ports (Shanghai, Ningbo, etc.) are available on request.

 

Quality, Certificates, and Inspection

Mill Test Certificate (MTC) per EN 10204 3.1 is shipped with every lot. The MTC lists heat number, chemical composition, and mechanical properties from the actual production heat.

Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, or another nominated agency is available on request and at buyer's cost.

Quality system: GNEE operates an in-house mill with ISO 9001 quality management. Specific certifications (DNV, TÜV, etc.) available on request.

Country of origin: China. Form A / Form E / Form FTA certificates of origin issued on request.

 

 

FAQ

What is the MOQ? 1 ton. For trial orders or first-time customers, we are flexible on smaller quantities - talk to us before placing the order.

What is the lead time? 15–30 days for standard stock sizes and tempers. Custom tempers, special thicknesses, or surface treatments may take longer. The exact lead time is confirmed with your quotation.

What tempers are available for 1040? 1040 is non-heat-treatable. Available tempers: O (annealed), H14, H16, H18, H22, H24, H26. T tempers (T3, T6, T8, T351, T851) are not applicable to 1040.

Can I get a sample? Yes. Standard stock samples are free of charge; you cover the courier (FedEx, DHL, TNT, or your freight-collect account). Custom samples with your logo or special spec may carry a small fee.

Do you provide Mill Test Certificates? Yes. Every shipment comes with an MTC per EN 10204 3.1. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV) is available on request.
