Product Introduction

Product introduction of 5154 aluminum

5154 (EN AW-5154, UNS A95154) is a non-heat-treatable 5xxx-grade aluminum–magnesium alloy with 3.1–3.9% magnesium as its main alloying element. With higher magnesium than 5052, it delivers more strength while keeping good formability and very good weldability. Because it is not strengthened by heat treatment, its properties come only from cold work, so it is supplied in annealed (O) and strain-hardened (H1x, H2x, H3x) tempers.

Its key characteristics are:

Good corrosion resistance in seawater, marine-air and industrial atmospheres - a common choice for marine and coastal service.

Excellent weldability with standard MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW); little strength loss in the weld zone.

Moderate-to-high strength with formability that stays usable through H32/H34.

Non-heat-treatable - no T-tempers; only cold work raises strength.

It is most often specified for welded structures - pressure vessels, fuel and chemical tanks, ship and marine components, and transport equipment - where corrosion resistance and weldability matter more than maximum load-bearing strength. Compared with 5052 it offers slightly higher strength; compared with 5083 it offers better formability at lower strength.

Mechanical properties of 5154 aluminum plate and sheet

5154 is strain-hardenable, not heat-treatable. The table shows ASTM B209 values for sheet and plate (typical thickness up to 6.3 mm); thicker plate carries the same tempers with thickness-dependent minima. Confirm exact values against the Mill Test Certificate (MTC). H22/H24/H26/H28 are the corresponding non-stabilized tempers to H32/H34/H36/H38.

Temper Tensile strength (MPa) Yield strength, min (MPa) Elongation, min (%)
O (annealed) 215 – 275 85 18
H32 (H22) 250 – 305 180 10

Welded vessels & tanks

Pressure vessels, welded storage tanks, fuel tanks and chemical containers.

Transportation

Truck and trailer bodies, rail tank cars, fuel tankers and transport equipment.

Chemical & industrial

Process equipment, heat-exchanger components and coastal architectural or industrial fabrications.

Welding and fabrication of 5154 aluminum

Welding: excellent with standard MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW). Use 5154, 5554 or 5356 filler to retain corrosion resistance; 4043 is fine where appearance and corrosion are not critical. Strength loss in the weld zone is small.

Forming: good in O, H32 and H34 - suitable for bending and drawing. Higher tempers form less and are used where minimal forming is needed; observe a sensible bend radius by thickness.

Machining: fair. Harder tempers machine better than soft ones; use sharp carbide tools and coolant to avoid stickiness.

Service temperature: because 5154 contains more than 3% magnesium, avoid long-term use above roughly 65–100 °C, where higher-Mg 5xxx alloys can lose corrosion resistance (sensitization).

Heat treatment: none - 5154 is not strengthenable by heat treatment; only cold work raises strength.

Anodizing and surface options for 5154 aluminum

5154 can be anodized, but it does not produce the clear, bright decorative film that 5005 or 6063 give. In marine and industrial service it is more often used as mill finish or with paint / PVDF coil coating, which also protects the surface. It accepts brushing, polishing, coating and embossing well.

Finishes: mill finish, brushed, polished, color-anodized where specified, stucco embossed, or PVC/PE film protected.

Coating: fluorocarbon (PVDF) and polyester coil coating where a specified color is required for architectural or marine exposure.

FAQ

What is 5154 aluminum used for?

5154 is used where good corrosion resistance, weldability and moderate-to-high strength are all needed: ship and marine structures, welded pressure vessels, fuel and chemical storage tanks, transport and rail tank equipment, and coastal architectural or industrial fabrications.

Is 5154 a marine-grade aluminum?

Yes. 5154 has good resistance to seawater and marine-atmosphere corrosion, so it is widely used for ship hull structures, deckhouses, marine piping and ship-container plates. For the higher-Mn European marine variant, specify EN AW-5154B (AlMg3.5Mn); tell us the service condition and we will confirm the suitable grade.

Can 5154 aluminum be heat treated?

No. 5154 is non-heat-treatable. Its strength comes only from cold work (strain hardening), so tempers run O, H1x, H2x and H3x. There is no T-temper, and the alloy should not be used in long-term service above about 65–100 °C where higher-Mg 5xxx alloys can lose corrosion resistance.

Which tempers are available for 5154 plate and sheet?

Common tempers are O, H111, H112, H22/H32, H24/H34, H26/H36 and H38. H32 and H34 are the usual choices for welded marine and structural work; O is chosen when extensive forming is needed.

What filler wire should be used when welding 5154?

Use 5154 or 5554 filler (or 5356) to retain corrosion resistance after welding; 4043 is acceptable where appearance and corrosion are not critical. 5154 welds well with standard MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW), with little loss of strength in the weld zone.

How does 5154 compare with 5052 and 5083?

5154 sits between them: it has slightly higher magnesium and strength than 5052, and better formability than 5083 at lower strength. 5083 is chosen for the heaviest marine structural loads; 5052 for lighter, formability-led work; 5154 for welded tanks, vessels and marine parts needing balanced strength and corrosion resistance.

Does 5154 anodize well?

5154 can be anodized, but it does not give the clear, bright decorative film that 5005 or 6063 produce. In marine and industrial service it is more often used as mill finish or with paint/PVDF coating, which also protects the surface. Confirm the finish with your drawing.

What sizes and tolerances does GNEE supply for 5154?

GNEE supplies 5154 as coil, sheet and plate: thickness 0.5–120 mm, width up to 3100 mm, length up to 13000 mm or cut-to-length, in common stock sizes such as 1250×2500 and 1500×3000 mm. Dimensional tolerances follow ASTM B209 / EN 485-2; send your size, temper and quantity to GNEE for a quote.
