Fabrication and Heat Treatment

Machinability

The machinability of the aluminium / aluminum 5252 alloy is poor when compared with other aluminium / aluminum alloys. If machining is performed, lubricating oil must be used. However, the finish tends to be ‘gummy’.

Forming

The aluminium / aluminum 5252 alloy can be hot and cold formed very easily.

Welding

The aluminium / aluminum 5252 alloy is weldable using commercial welding methods. The preferred methods are TIG and /or MIG. Brazing method is not suitable.

Forging

The aluminium / aluminum 5252 alloy is forgeable from 510 to 371°C (950 to 700°F).

Hot Working

The aluminium / aluminum 5252 alloy can be hot worked if required in the range of 482°C (900°F) down to 260°C (500°F).

Cold Working

The aluminium / aluminum 5252 alloy can be easily cold worked using the conventional methods. It is suited for cold forming by blanking, drawing, or bending.

Annealing

The aluminium / aluminum 5252 alloy can be annealed at 343°C (650°F) and then air cooled.
