Certified ASTM B209 6063-T5 / T6 Aluminum Sheet-The Standard for Architectural & Decorative Excellence

GNEE Aluminum is a premier global manufacturer specializing in 6063 Aluminium Plate, renowned for its smooth surface finish and exceptional response to anodizing and powder coating. While 6061 is chosen for heavy structures, our 6063 aluminum sheets are engineered for applications where aesthetics, corrosion resistance, and intricate formability are paramount. We offer precision-milled 6063 plates in T5, T6, and T651 tempers, tailored for high-end architectural and industrial designs.

Its key characteristics are:

Very good anodizing response - gives a clear, bright and uniform oxide film; widely used for window/door frames, curtain walls and visible trim.

Good formability - bends and shapes easily, suitable for lightly formed parts and complex extrusions.

Good weldability with standard MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW); common for fabricated frames and enclosures.

Good atmospheric and coastal corrosion resistance for outdoor and architectural exposure.

Moderate strength - adequate for decorative, enclosure and lightly loaded structural parts rather than heavy load-bearing members.

It is most often chosen where appearance, formability and corrosion resistance matter more than maximum strength - architectural profiles, decorative trim, heat sinks, furniture and transport interior parts.

Applications of 6063 aluminum plate and sheet

6063 is chosen where appearance, formability and corrosion resistance matter more than maximum strength. Its smooth surface and uniform anodizing make it a natural fit for visible and decorative parts.

Architecture & building

Window and door frames, curtain walls, decorative ceilings, handrails, balustrades, facades and interior trim where a clean, anodized finish is required.

Heat dissipation

Heat sinks and cooling fins for LED lighting, power electronics and household appliances, where the alloy's high thermal conductivity and easy extrusion help form thin, efficient profiles.

Transport interior & furniture

Vehicle and rail interior trim, luggage racks, furniture frames, display stands, shelves and general hardware where light weight and a good surface finish are valued.

General fabrication & enclosures

Machine guards, instrument housings, signage backings, and lightly formed or welded assemblies for industrial and commercial use.

Outdoor & marine-air hardware

Coastal and outdoor furniture, railings and architectural fittings with good atmospheric corrosion resistance; for continuous seawater immersion, confirm the service condition before ordering.

Welding and fabrication of 6063 aluminum

Welding: good with standard MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW). Use 4043 filler for good flow and color match, or 5356 when higher joint strength or better color after anodizing is needed. The heat-affected zone loses some strength versus the parent T6 material, so design welded joints around the post-weld properties where load matters.

Machining: adequate for light machining, drilling, routing and shallow pockets; it is softer and less rigid than 6061. For heavy material removal or tight tolerances, 6061-T651 is usually the better choice; T651 plate is preferred when a 6063 part will be significantly machined.

Forming: bends and forms easily for moderate radii; O temper is used where deep drawing or severe forming is required.

Heat treatment: T5/T6 are heat-treated tempers; O is the soft temper. Do not anneal or reheat parts that must keep T6 strength unless re-solution treating and aging afterward.

Anodizing and surface options for 6063 aluminum

6063 is one of the most commonly anodized aluminum alloys: it produces a clear, bright and uniform oxide film, which is why it is the default choice for architectural extrusions, window/door frames and decorative trim. For the most consistent color, specify anodizing-quality material and agree the finish on a sample before production.

Finishes: mill finish, brushed, polished, color-anodized, or PVC/PE film protected.

Coating: fluorocarbon (PVDF) and polyester coating where a specified architectural color is required.

FAQ

What is 6063 aluminum?

6063 is a heat-treatable 6xxx alloy whose main elements are magnesium and silicon (Al-Mg-Si). It is a medium-strength grade with very good extrudability, formability and anodizing response. It is widely used for architectural profiles, decorative trim and parts that need a smooth, uniform anodized finish, rather than for heavy structural load.

What is the difference between 6063-T5 and 6063-T6?

Both are heat-treated tempers. T5 is cooled from extrusion and artificially aged; T6 is solution heat treated and artificially aged. T6 is stronger (minimum tensile 205 MPa vs 150 MPa for T5) and is often chosen when the part will be machined or sees moderate load, while T5 is common for profiles and decorative parts where strength is less critical. T651 adds a stress-relieving stretch for flatter plate.

What are the mechanical properties of 6063-T6?

Per ASTM B209 / EN 485-2, 6063-T6 sheet and plate show a minimum tensile strength of 205 MPa (about 30 ksi) and a minimum yield of 170 MPa (about 25 ksi), with elongation of 10%. T5 is lower at 150 MPa tensile and 110 MPa yield. Confirm the exact figures on the Mill Test Certificate for your heat and thickness.

Is 6063 good for anodizing?

Yes. 6063 is one of the most commonly anodized aluminum alloys: it produces a clear, bright and uniform oxide film, which is why it is the default choice for architectural extrusions, window and door frames, and decorative trim. For the most consistent color, specify anodizing-quality material and agree the finish on a sample before production.

Can 6063 aluminum be welded?

Yes. 6063 welds well with standard MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW). Use 4043 filler for good flow and color match, or 5356 when higher joint strength or better color after anodizing is needed. Like other heat-treatable alloys, the heat-affected zone loses some strength compared with the parent T6 material; design welded joints around the post-weld properties where load matters.

Is 6063 good for CNC machining?

It machines adequately, though it is softer and less rigid than 6061. 6063 is fine for light machining, drilling, routing and the shallow pockets typical of decorative or enclosure parts. For heavy material removal, tight tolerances or threaded features, 6061-T651 is usually the better choice. T651 plate is preferred when a 6063 part will have significant machining.

What tempers and sizes of 6063 does GNEE supply?

GNEE supplies 6063 as coil, sheet and plate in O, T4, T5, T6 and T651 tempers: thickness 0.5–150 mm (sheet/coil to about 6 mm; thicker plate on request), width up to 2650 mm, length up to 12000 mm or cut-to-length, in common stock sizes such as 1250×2500 and 1500×3000 mm. Dimensional tolerances follow ASTM B209 / EN 485-2; send your size, temper and quantity to gnee@gnee.com for a quote.

Is 6063 suitable for outdoor and marine use?

6063 has good atmospheric and coastal corrosion resistance and is widely used for window/door frames, railings, curtain walls and outdoor furniture. It performs well in atmospheric and coastal (marine-air) exposure, but for continuous seawater immersion or heavy marine structural load, tell us the exact service condition so we can confirm the suitable grade and temper.
