5083 Aluminum Sheet for Marine Description

5083 Aluminum Sheet is a marine grade alloy that is popular for its excellent strength, weldability and corrosion resistance. This makes it an ideal material for the marine industry.

Another significant feature of 5083 aluminum sheet metal is its malleability, which allows for easy shaping, bending, and forming without compromising its strength and integrity. As a result, manufacturers can create complex and intricate designs, ensuring that they meet the specific requirements of their clients.

Features

Seawater Corrosion Resistance

The magnesium content of 5083 aluminum sheet is as high as 4.0~4.9%, which gives it excellent corrosion resistance to environments such as chloride ions, salt spray and seawater.

Excellent welding performance

5083 aluminum alloy plate has a high strength retention rate in the welded heat-affected zone, which is not easy to produce cracks and is suitable for automated welding of hull structures.

High strength and light weight

The density of aluminum plate is only 1/3 of steel, which ensures the structural strength and greatly reduces the weight of the whole ship and improves fuel efficiency.

Good machinability

5083 aluminum ship plate can be adapted to most of the machining processes: bending, rolling, cutting, milling, punching, drawing, etc..

Strong fatigue performance

5083 aluminum sheets for boat building can withstand the long-term alternating stresses of ships under waves and load changes.

Environmentally friendly and recyclable

Aluminum alloy can be recycled and reused, which is in line with the modern green shipbuilding concept.

Recommended Tempers for Marine Use

5083 H116 Marine Aluminum Plate is specially designed for marine use with good corrosion resistance and post weld stability commonly used for hull, deck, and gangway.
5083 H321 Aluminum Welded Plate has better deformation control and is more suitable for cabin walls.
5083 H111 Aluminum Plate is lightly work-hardened and is suitable for parts requiring formability.
5083 O Aluminum alloy plate is softer and can be used for deep-drawn and complex formed parts, such as cabin trim and pipe connections.

Everything You Want to Know

What is 5083 aluminum used for?

Other uses for this alloy include transportation applications such as rail, truck, and vehicle bodies, as well as pressure vessels and food processors. This alloy has very good corrosion resistance (susceptible to deterioration after prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures) and moderate strength. Its weldability is a plus. It finds uses in transportation, pressure vessels, cryogenics, towers and drilling rigs, gas/oil piping, ordnance, and armor plate.

What is the difference between aluminum and marine-grade aluminium?

For use in water or wet environments, aluminum requires additional treatment to withstand the demands of the highly corrosive environment, more so in marine applications. Special alloys are added to enhance certain aluminium properties like corrosion resistance resulting in marine-grade aluminum.

How to protect aluminum from saltwater corrosion?

Applying protective coatings to metal surfaces can also help prevent saltwater corrosion. Coatings create a barrier between the metal and the elements, reducing direct exposure to moisture and salt. Powder Coating: Powder coatings cover the metal in a tough, even layer that protects against scratches and salt exposure.

What is the difference between 5086 and 5083 aluminum?

5083 aluminum contains 4.0-4.9% magnesium, which makes it more corrosion-resistant and strong than 5086 aluminum. In contrast, 5086 aluminum contains 3.5-4.5% magnesium and a small amount of manganese, which makes it more weldable and easier to form than 5083 aluminum.
