Product Introduction

ASTM B209 3003-H18 Aluminum Sheet: Description

If you are looking for an aluminum material that balances high strength, rust resistance, and cost control, the 3003-H18 aluminum sheet is exactly what you need.

Alloy 3003 is the most widely used anti-rust aluminum. It is alloyed with about 1.2% manganese, making it about 20% stronger than 1100 series pure aluminum. The "H18" temper means the metal is fully cold-worked to its maximum hardness. It does not undergo any heat treatment. As a result, the 3003-H18 aluminum sheet offers the highest strength within the 3003 series.

It is strictly manufactured under the ASTM B209 standard. We supply this material globally for applications that require structural support and weather resistance, such as roofing panels, storage tanks, and industrial cladding. As a direct manufacturer, we offer competitive wholesale prices and custom sizes cut to your exact requirements.

Chemical Composition of 3003 Aluminum Sheet

The addition of Manganese (Mn) is what gives 3003 its signature properties. It remains highly resistant to corrosion while gaining significant strength over pure aluminum.

Element Content (%)
Aluminum (Al) Balance
Manganese (Mn) 1.0 – 1.5
Copper (Cu) 0.05 – 0.20
Iron (Fe) ≤ 0.70
Silicon (Si) ≤ 0.60
Zinc (Zn) ≤ 0.10
Others (Each/Total) ≤ 0.05 / ≤ 0.15

Mechanical Properties of 3003 H18 Aluminum Sheet

Because H18 is the "full hard" condition, its mechanical data reflects maximum strength but minimum elongation.

Property Value
Tensile Strength (Rm) ≥ 200 MPa (approx. 29,000 psi)
Yield Strength (Rp0.2) ≥ 170 MPa (approx. 24,600 psi)
Elongation (A50mm) ≥ 2%
Hardness High (for 3003 series)

Engineer's Note: The yield strength of H18 is nearly double that of the annealed (O) temper. This means it can bear much heavier loads before it starts to deform permanently.

Core Advantages of 3003 Aluminum Sheet

  • Maximum Strength for 3000 Series: Because it is heavily cold-rolled, H18 gives you the highest strength without needing expensive heat treatments.
  • Excellent Rust & Corrosion Resistance: It handles rain, moisture, and mild chemicals easily. It will not rust like steel, saving you maintenance costs.
  • Great Weldability: You can weld 3003 aluminum easily using standard methods (MIG or TIG).
  • Cost-Effective: It is significantly cheaper than 5052 or 5083 marine-grade aluminum yet offers enough weather resistance for most outdoor and industrial uses.

Surface Finish Options for 3003 Aluminum Plate

Depending on your final product, we offer several surface treatments:

  • Mill Finish: The bare, natural silver look straight from the rolling mill. Best for industrial use.
  • Color Coated (PE / PVDF): Pre-painted sheets for roofing and wall panels. PVDF offers 15-20 years of outdoor weather resistance.
  • Stucco Embossed: A textured surface that hides scratches and reduces light reflection. Very popular for freezer linings and pipe jacketing.

Common Applications of 3003 Aluminum Sheet

Because 3003 H18 is hard and flat, it is mainly used where shape retention and strength are required, rather than deep drawing.

  • Roofing Sheets and Corrugated Panels: The high hardness prevents the roof from denting under heavy rain, hail, or snow loads.
  • Insulation Jacketing: Used to wrap and protect industrial pipes and storage tanks in chemical plants. The metal acts as a strong, rust-proof outer shell.
  • Truck and Trailer Side Panels: The H18 temper provides a rigid surface that withstands daily road vibrations and minor impacts.
  • Storage Tanks: For storing non-corrosive chemicals, food products, or water.
  • Signage and Billboards: A flat, hard surface that holds paint well and stands up to strong winds.

Can You Bend 3003 H18 Aluminum Sheet?

  • Cutting: Very easy. You can shear, saw, or laser cut it cleanly.
  • Welding: Good performance.
  • Bending and Forming: Limited. Because H18 is "full hard," its ductility (elongation) is very low (around 2%). If you try to bend it at a sharp 90-degree angle, it will crack. To bend 3003-H18 safely, you must use a very large bending radius.

Are you worried about bending or cracks?
If your production process requires bending, H18 might not be the best choice. Send our technical team a simple sketch of your required bend angle and radius. We will evaluate it for free and tell you whether you should use H18, or if you need to switch to the softer H14 temper.

3003 H18 vs H14 Aluminum Sheet

Many clients ask us which temper to buy. The main difference lies in the cold-working process. H14 is "half hard," while H18 is "full hard."

Property 3003 H18 (Full Hard) 3003 H14 (Half Hard)
Tensile Strength Higher (≥ 200 MPa) Medium (approx. 140-180 MPa)
Ductility (Elongation) Low (≥ 2%) Better (≥ 8%)
Bending Ability Poor (Prone to cracking) Good (Can do 90-degree bends)
Best Used For Flat panels, structural sheets, simple curves Formed parts, folded casings, deep profiles

Summary: If you need the material to stay flat and carry a load, buy H18. If you need to put it into a press brake and fold it into a box or an angle, buy H14.

Packaging and Shipping

We understand that a cheap price means nothing if the aluminum sheet arrives scratched or corroded by seawater. Our packaging strictly follows export standards.

  • Moisture Protection: Sheets are wrapped in waterproof plastic film and thick kraft paper. Desiccants are added inside to prevent white rust during ocean transit.
  • Physical Protection: Edge protectors are applied. The sheets are securely strapped to strong, fumigated wooden pallets.
  • Custom Packaging: If you are a distributor and need sheets packed in specific weights (e.g., 2 tons per pallet) for easier forklift handling, just let us know.

FAQ

It is a non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy primarily composed of aluminum and manganese. The "H18" indicates the metal has been cold-rolled to its maximum hardness ("full hard" temper). It is known for its high strength, flat surface, and excellent rust resistance.

2. Is 3003 H18 stronger than H14?

Yes. 3003 H18 has a tensile strength of over 200 MPa, while H14 is around 140-180 MPa. H18 is significantly stiffer and harder because it undergoes more cold working during manufacturing.

3. Can I bend a 3003 H18 aluminum sheet?

Generally, no. Because it is fully hard, it has very low elasticity. Bending it sharply will cause the metal to crack or break at the bend line. If your design requires tight folding, you should choose the softer 3003 H14 or H24 tempers.

4. What is the ASTM B209 standard?

ASTM B209 is the standard specification set by the American Society for Testing and Materials for aluminum and aluminum-alloy flat sheet, coiled sheet, and plate. It dictates the exact chemical composition limits and mechanical property requirements the factory must follow.

5. Why choose 3003 instead of 1050 pure aluminum?

3003 contains manganese, making it about 20% stronger than 1050 pure aluminum. It handles physical stress much better while maintaining the same excellent corrosion resistance and workability.

6. Do you supply custom-sized 3003 aluminum sheets?

Yes. As a direct manufacturer, we cut aluminum coils into sheets based on your specific width and length requirements. This reduces your scrap rate and saves you money.
