What Is 5754 Aluminum Plate?
5754 is a 5xxx-series aluminum alloy with magnesium as the main alloying element, typically 2.6–3.6%. It is a non-heat-treatable alloy supplied in annealed or strain-hardened tempers. Its main advantages are good corrosion resistance-especially in marine and industrial atmospheres-good weldability, and moderate strength with good formability. That makes it a common choice for welded structures, transport bodies, and building cladding where weight saving and corrosion performance matter more than very high strength. Unlike precipitation-hardened 7xxx alloys, 5754 is strengthened by magnesium and cold work, so its properties are stable through welding and it does not lose strength in the heat-affected zone.
Key Features of 5754 Aluminum Plate
Good corrosion resistance in marine, industrial, and urban atmospheres; suitable for seawater-exposed parts when properly finished.
Good weldability with TIG/MIG processes. Use 5356 or 5183 filler. 4043 filler is generally not recommended for marine or high-Mg service because of sensitization risk in the heat-affected zone.
Moderate strength with good formability, including bending and folding, which suits fabricated and welded assemblies.
Good anodizing and painting response, useful for architectural and exposed applications.

Chemical Composition of 5754 Aluminum
The composition below follows ASTM B209 / EN 573-3, given in weight percent with aluminum as balance.

| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.40 |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤ 0.40 |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.10 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.50–0.80 |
| Magnesium (Mg) | 2.6–3.6 |
| Chromium (Cr) | ≤ 0.30 |
| Zinc (Zn) | ≤ 0.20 |
| Titanium (Ti) | ≤ 0.15 |
| Others, each / total | ≤ 0.05 / ≤ 0.15 |
| Aluminum (Al) | Balance |
Mechanical Properties of 5754 Aluminum Plate
The table shows typical minimum values per ASTM B209 for common plate tempers. Actual minimums depend on thickness and product form, so always confirm the figures on the mill test report.
| Temper | Tensile strength (MPa) | Yield strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 190 min | 80 min | 18 min |
| H111 | 200 min | 100 min | 15 min |
| H32 | 250 min | 145 min | 12 min |
| H34 | 270 min | 180 min | 10 min |
| H36 | 290 min | 215 min | 6 min |
Density is about 2.67 g/cm³. For thin sheet or different tempers, request the exact minimums against the governing specification.

Inspection and Testing of 5754 Aluminum Plate
Every 5754 aluminum plate order is checked against the governing specification before dispatch. The routine checks below are carried out at the mill and recorded on the mill test certificate.
| Check | Method / standard |
|---|---|
| Chemical composition | Verified by optical emission spectrometry (OES); results assessed against ASTM B209 / EN 573-3. |
| Mechanical properties | Tensile and yield strength, elongation tested per ASTM E8 / EN ISO 6892 on representative samples. |
| Dimensions & shape | Thickness, width, length, flatness, and edge squareness measured per ASTM B209 / EN 485-2. |
| Surface condition | Visual inspection for cracks, laminations, inclusions, and handling marks on the mill-finish surface. |
| Mill certificate | Each order ships with EN 10204 3.1 MTC covering chemistry and mechanical results. |
On request, GNEE can arrange EN 10204 3.2 certification and third-party inspection by SGS, BV, or TÜV. For thick plate, ultrasonic testing (UT) or additional bend tests can be added to the inspection plan.

Packaging of 5754 Aluminum Plate
5754 aluminum plate is packed for long-distance sea and land transport to protect the surface and edges from moisture and mechanical damage. Standard seaworthy packing includes:
Each plate wrapped with moisture-proof (PE) film and interleaved with kraft or separating paper.
Corner and edge protectors fitted to avoid handling damage.
Bundle secured on a strong wooden pallet or in a wooden case with steel strapping.
For thin sheet or coil, packed in a wooden or steel cradle (eye-to-wall or eye-to-sky) with core protection.
Each package is labelled with grade, temper, dimensions, heat/lot number, applicable standard, and gross/net weight, and supplied with a packing list to support customs clearance.
