6061 Aluminum sheet is an al-si-mg alloy that has been strengthened by precipitation hardening. 6061 aluminum has a high strength-to-weight ratio, above-average corrosion resistance, good machinability, and is well suited for welding.

6061 Aluminum sheet is the most versatile heat treatable aluminum alloy. After heat treatment, its strength is comparable to low carbon steel.

It was originally developed in 1935 and continues to appear in a wide range of general-purpose applications today. It is often used in applications utilizing welding or brazing.

Features Of 6061 Aluminum Sheet

In terms of corrosion resistance, the 6061 aluminum sheet is the highest in its class of heat-treated aluminum. This makes it suitable for heavy structures and marine environments. The product has a protective film that helps prevent corrosion. For further corrosion resistance, other coatings or anodization can be used.

The conductivity of alloy 6061 is 40% that of copper. It is often used in the electrical field in the form of electrical accessories and connectors.

6061 Alloy aluminum is highly weldable, for example using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) or Metal Inert Gas (MIG).

Generally, the properties near the weld after welding are 6061-0, and the strength loss is about 80%. The material can be heat treated again to restore the -T4 or -T6 temper condition of the entire part.

After welding, the material can naturally age and regain some of its strength. Typical filler materials are 4043 or 5356. Good machinability in hard T4 and T6 tempered conditions. Machining in the annealed state is particularly difficult.
