What is Aluminium 5083 Sheet & Plate

Aluminium alloy 5083 is composed of approximately 5.2% magnesium, 0.1% manganese, and 0.1% chromium. In its tempered condition, it demonstrates high strength while maintaining excellent ductility and formability. Renowned for its superior corrosion resistance, particularly in marine environments, 5083 alloy also features low density and excellent thermal conductivity, common characteristics of aluminum alloys.

Typical applications include situations requiring a weldable alloy with moderate to high strength and strong corrosion resistance, such as marine structures, unfired pressure vessels, TV towers, drilling rigs, transportation equipment, and armor plating.

Description

Aluminium 5083 is a strong magnesium–manganese–chromium alloy. It can be strengthened through cold working but is not heat-treatable for higher strength. It offers good ductility for its strength level, surpassing many other 5000-series alloys.

GNEE Aluminum supplies 5083 alloy in sheet, plate, and strip form, available in standard and custom tempers and dimensions.

Corrosion Resistance

Alloy 5083 offers excellent general corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments and aqueous solutions within a pH range of 4–9. Its durability is due to a naturally forming oxide film that quickly reforms if damaged. However, in reducing media or when this protective film cannot reform, corrosion may accelerate. The alloy can be anodized to further enhance surface protection.

In extreme environments, 5083 may experience exfoliation corrosion, though H116 temper is the least susceptible and meets ASTM G66 (ASSET Test) standards. According to AS 1734, the alloy is not recommended for use above 65°C.

Because aluminum is reactive, it may corrode faster when in contact with dissimilar metals-appropriate galvanic protection measures should be considered.

Pressure Vessel Applications

Standard AS1210 Pressure Vessels prequalify 5083 alloy for service temperatures up to 65°C in O, H112, and H321 tempers.

Fabrication

Aluminium 5083 is easily cold formable due to its ductility. Forming loads and tool wear are generally lower than those for carbon steel. For piercing and blanking, the punch-to-die clearance should be about 7% of the material thickness per side for temper O and 7.5% for other tempers.

H321 0t 1t 1.5t 2t

Welding

Alloy 5083 is readily weldable using TIG or MIG processes with filler wires such as 5183, 5356, or 5556. Welding the H116 temper will reduce the tensile and yield strengths in the heat-affected zone to those of the annealed condition. It is essential that the surface be dry and clean to prevent contamination or porosity and that all flux residues be thoroughly removed using hot water scrubbing.

Heat Treatment

Annealing of 5083 is carried out at 350°C; time and cooling rate are not critical. Stress relief is seldom needed but can be done at around 220°C. If maintaining strength is crucial, stress-relief testing should be performed.

GNEE Aluminum ensures high-quality 5083 aluminum sheet and plate products with excellent dimensional accuracy, performance stability, and compliance with international standards, making them ideal for marine, transportation, and pressure vessel applications.
