Mechanical Properties of Aluminum 6061-T6 Rod

What Is 6061 Aluminum

Aluminum 6061 is one of the most widely used heat-treatable aluminum alloys, consisting primarily of aluminum with magnesium and silicon as main alloying elements. This combination gives an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and workability, and because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, 6061 is commonly selected for demanding structural and engineering applications.

Mechanical Properties of 6061-T6

In the T6 condition, 6061 has a tensile strength of about 310 MPa, yield strength of about 276 MPa, fatigue strength of about 97 MPa, Brinell hardness of about 95, elongation at break of about 12 percent, and density 2.7 g per cubic centimeter. The T6 temper, achieved by solution heat treatment and artificial aging, maximizes strength while maintaining reasonable ductility.

Corrosion Resistance

6061 naturally forms a protective oxide layer that resists corrosion in atmospheric and marine environments. Its corrosion resistance is very good, though slightly inferior to 6063 because of its higher alloying content. With proper surface treatment such as anodizing, 6061 performs reliably in outdoor and marine applications.

Machinability

6061 is well known for its excellent machinability, responding well to cutting, drilling, milling, and turning operations with clean surfaces and tight tolerances. Extruded rectangular, square, and round bars conform to ASTM B221 and AMS QQ-A-200/8, while cold-finished hexagonal and round bars meet ASTM B211 and AMS QQ-A-225/8. Round bars under 2.0 inches in diameter are manufactured to tight tolerances for precision screw-machine operations.

Applications

6061-T6 rod is used for aircraft and aerospace structures, automotive and truck frames, marine components and boat structures, bridges, towers, and load-bearing frames, and precision-machined industrial parts. It is also a popular choice for fittings, fasteners, and general fabrication because of its strength, corrosion resistance, and ease of fabrication.
