Why is one side bright and the other dim?
It's all about the manufacturing process.
Aluminum foil is pressed repeatedly using highly polished steel rollers. As the foil becomes thinner, two layers of foil are often rolled and stacked together to achieve the desired thickness and prevent the sheet from cracking.
The two surfaces in contact with the steel roller are glossy, while the two surfaces in contact with each other between the two layers of aluminum foil are matte.
