6063 aluminum rod (designation AlMg0.7Si) is one of the most widely used aluminum alloy products, particularly in architectural and decorative applications. Its popularity rests on four advantages: corrosion resistance, extrusion formability, adequate strength after aging, and outstanding surface treatment performance. This article explains each advantage with the data behind it.
1. Good Corrosion Resistance
6063 is a magnesium-silicon alloy that forms a stable natural oxide film. It can be used for long periods in humid, mildly acidic or mildly alkaline environments without significant damage, and it is the most anodization-friendly grade among the common 6xxx alloys. Compared with 1-series pure aluminum, 6063 offers better mechanical properties at similar corrosion performance; compared with 6061, its slightly lower alloy content gives it a small edge in anodized clarity and in mildly corrosive atmospheric service. This makes it suitable for harsh environmental conditions and long-life architectural applications.
2. Excellent Extrusion and Forming Performance
6063 has the best extrudability of the 6xxx series: the alloy flows readily through the die, so complex hollow sections, thin-wall profiles and precise cross-sections can be extruded with tight dimensional control. The rod can subsequently be stretched, bent and formed into various shapes and sizes without cracking. This formability is the key reason 6063 dominates the production of window frames, door frames, curtain-wall profiles and decorative sections. Note that formability and machinability are different properties: while 6063 is highly formable, its machining (cutting) performance is only moderate - for heavy machining operations, free-cutting alloys or 6061 are more suitable.

3. Adequate Strength and Stiffness after Aging
As a heat-treatable alloy, 6063 develops useful mechanical properties through solution treatment and aging. Typical values are:
| Temper | Min. Yield Strength (MPa) | Min. Tensile Strength (MPa) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| T5 | 110 - 130 | 150 - 170 | Extruded profiles, moderate-load members |
| T6 | 160 - 190 | 195 - 215 | Structural sections with higher loading |
Exact values depend on section thickness and the governing standard (EN 755, ASTM B221 or equivalent). This strength, combined with the low density of aluminum, allows the rod to withstand significant loads in lightweight designs - suitable for applications requiring higher strength and stiffness than pure aluminum can provide, while retaining good weldability.
4. Outstanding Surface Treatment Performance
6063 anodizes to a bright, uniform finish with excellent film clarity, and it accepts electrophoretic coating and powder coating across a wide color range. This makes it easy to achieve personalized appearance requirements - from silver, champagne and bronze anodized finishes to full-color powder coatings - and is why the alloy is the reference material for architectural surface finishes.
5. Typical Applications
In construction, 6063 aluminum rod and profiles are used for window and door frames, curtain walls, railings and sunshades; in transportation, for bus handrails, luggage racks and vehicle decorative trim; in electronics and electrical appliances, for heat sinks and housings; and in general engineering, for structural and decorative members where corrosion resistance, formability, anodized finish and cost must be balanced.
