During aluminum sheet manufacturing, different alloying elements are added to obtain specific mechanical properties. Based on these alloying elements, aluminum sheets are generally classified into seven major series. For example, 2024 belongs to the 2xxx series, 3003 aluminum is part of the 3xxx series, and 5052-H32 aluminum sheet falls under the 5xxx series.
1000 Series Aluminum
The 1000 series consists of pure aluminum plates, such as 1060, with an aluminum content of more than 99%. This series offers excellent electrical conductivity and low cost, making it widely used in transformers, packaging, and electrical applications.
2000 Series Aluminum
The 2000 series aluminum sheets use copper as the main alloying element, with copper content typically ranging from 2% to 5% or even higher, depending on application requirements. These alloys have much higher hardness and strength than most other aluminum grades. Because they are extensively used in the aerospace industry, 2xxx series alloys are often referred to as aviation aluminum.
Since they are less commonly used in civilian applications, fewer manufacturers produce 2000 series aluminum, and their prices are relatively high. GNEE is able to supply selected 2xxx series aluminum alloys upon request.

3003-H14 vs 5052-H32 Aluminum Sheet
3000 Series Aluminum
The 3000 series is an aluminum–manganese alloy, with manganese content generally between 2% and 5%. A typical product is the 3003-H14 aluminum sheet, which features excellent rust and corrosion resistance. It is widely used in humid environments, such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and related equipment. Compared with 5xxx series alloys, 3003 aluminum offers a clear price advantage.
5052-H32 Aluminum Sheet
5052-H32 is a representative 5xxx series aluminum alloy. It has a low density of about 2.68 g/cm³, meaning that for the same surface area, 5052 aluminum plates are lighter than many other aluminum grades.
Under identical specifications, 5052 aluminum provides higher tensile strength and better resistance to deformation. Its elongation rate of approximately 15–30% ensures excellent performance in stamping and bending processes.
Magnesium is the primary alloying element in 5052 aluminum, giving it outstanding corrosion and rust resistance, far superior to that of the 3003 series. As a result, 5052 aluminum is commonly used in aircraft fuel tanks, precision electronic components, hardware and building materials, security doors, and other demanding applications.
Both 5052 aluminum sheet and 3003 aluminum sheet are among the most commonly used aluminum alloys on the market and are representative products of their respective alloy series. Both materials can be bent and formed, but there are clear differences in composition, specifications, price, and mechanical performance.
Differences Between 5052 Aluminum Plate and 3003 Aluminum Plate
Chemical Composition
3003 aluminum is an aluminum–manganese (Al–Mn) alloy, with manganese as the primary alloying element.
5052 aluminum is an aluminum–magnesium (Al–Mg) alloy, with magnesium as the main alloying element.
The aluminum content in 3003 is slightly higher than that of 5052 aluminum.
Specifications and Thickness Range
3003 aluminum is mainly supplied as thin sheets, and thick plate applications are relatively limited.
5052 aluminum sheets are widely used in both thin and thick plate forms, making them suitable for a broader range of applications.
Price
Under the same conditions of thickness and size, the price of 5052 aluminum sheet is typically about USD 300 per ton higher than that of 3003 aluminum sheet, due to its higher alloy content and superior performance.
Mechanical Property Comparison: 3003 vs 5052 Aluminum
| Alloy | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Hardness (HB) | Fatigue Strength (MPa) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3003 | 150 | 145 | 13 | 40 | 62 |
| 5052 | 230 | 195 | 12 | 60 | 115 |
Summary
3003 aluminum offers good formability and lower cost, making it suitable for general bending and light-duty applications.
5052 aluminum provides significantly higher strength and better durability, especially for thicker plates and more demanding uses.
At GNEE, we supply both 3003 and 5052 aluminum sheets in a wide range of specifications to meet different project requirements.
7000 and 8000 Series Aluminum
The main advantage of the 7000 series lies in its high hardness, with performance levels close to those of the 2000 series.
The 8000 series is mainly represented by 8011 aluminum foil, which is primarily used for packaging applications.
GNEE Aluminum Supply
GNEE supplies 1xxx to 8xxx series aluminum alloys in multiple forms, including aluminum sheets, coils, and foil.
