As a representative of Al-Mg alloys, 5083 forged aluminum alloy armor plate has a magnesium content of 4.0%-4.9%, with tensile strength of more than 270MPa and excellent corrosion resistance, especially in marine environments. The material can be strengthened by cold working, and has excellent welding performance. The weld strength can reach 90%-95% of the parent material, and the density is only 2.71g/cm³. It is 30%-50% lighter than traditional steel at the same protection level, and the bending stiffness is 9 times that of armor steel. It can effectively resist attacks from light weapons and shrapnel, and has the ability to resist stress corrosion cracking. The service life exceeds 20 years in harsh environments such as salt spray.
Compared with other armor materials, 5083 aluminum alloy shows unique comprehensive advantages. Compared with magnesium alloy AZ31B-H24, it has better anti-ballistic performance at the same mass, with a V50 value 300-1000m/s higher; compared with 5052 aluminum plate, its tensile strength is increased by about 40%, which is particularly suitable for armor parts that withstand high-speed impact. The material also supports complex processing technology, with a minimum bending radius of up to 8mm. During laser cutting, only 2000W power is required with nitrogen protection to achieve high-precision processing. These characteristics make it an ideal choice for lightweight armor systems.
