Aluminum 5083 Marine Grade Plate for Shipbuilding

Among various speedboat hull materials, aluminum plates stand out for offering excellent strength and rigidity while keeping weight low. They also deliver outstanding seawater corrosion resistance and good weldability, making them ideal for marine applications. The use of marine-grade 5083 aluminum plates in shipbuilding can significantly reduce vessel weight and increase sailing speed.

By replacing traditional steel with 5083 aluminum, each ship can save approximately 8–100 tons in weight. Its applications extend beyond the hull and structural parts, covering furniture, cabinets, and deck components as well.

5083 aluminum plates possess excellent anti-rust properties, enabling them to withstand harsh marine climates and humid environments. Common tempers used in boat building include O, H111, H112, H116, and H321, with 5083-H321 being especially popular.

Different Tempers of 5083 Marine Grade Aluminum Plate

The 5083-H116 and 5083-H321 tempers exhibit superior corrosion resistance, making them more suitable for deep-sea and underwater environments than H111 and H112. Although H116 and H321 plates differ slightly in their production temperature, both offer much better corrosion resistance than other conditions.

Applications of 5083 Aluminum Plate

5083 marine aluminum plate is a representative Al-Mg alloy with high resistance to corrosion and rust, crucial for the underwater sections of ship hulls that are constantly exposed to seawater. The most commonly used grades are 5083-H116 and 5083-H321.

Keel: The central structural member connecting the bow and stern-5083 aluminum is commonly used here.

Deck and hull sides: Including engine pedestals, ship bottoms, and outer plating.

Transportation field: 5083-H116 is also used for automobile and aircraft fuel tanks due to its corrosion resistance and strength.

Advantages of Aluminum 5083 for Shipbuilding

Lightweight and fuel-efficient:
5083 aluminum has low density, reducing ship weight and fuel consumption. It improves the length-to-width ratio and stability, making ships easier to handle.

Excellent corrosion resistance:
Provides long-term protection from seawater corrosion, minimizing maintenance and repainting costs.

Superior processing and forming performance:
Easy to cut, stamp, bend, and form, enabling efficient lightweight design and optimized structure.

Outstanding weldability:
Fewer welds are needed, improving assembly efficiency and hull integrity.

Why Choose GNEE Aluminum

During production, a small amount of beryllium (Be) is added to the 5083 aluminum plate to reduce ingot cracking and enhance surface quality during rolling.

GNEE's 5083 marine aluminum plate is certified by DNV and CCS, ensuring compliance with international shipbuilding standards.

The plate surface is free from oil stains, scratches, rolling marks, and burrs, with smooth, clean edges.

With strong production capabilities, GNEE can handle orders ranging from 8 to 5000 tons, with a 7–35 day delivery time.
Maximum dimensions reach 2650 mm in width and 600 mm in thickness.

GNEE also offers competitive aluminum 5083 pricing based on its robust supply capacity.

Differences Between 5083 H111, H116, and H321 Aluminum Sheets

Temper Description Applications
H111 Fully annealed with slight work hardening, offering good flexibility and 90° bendability without cracking. General ship parts, cold forming applications.
H116 / H321 Designed for 5xxx series alloys with >4% Mg. Provide required strength and enhanced resistance to exfoliation and corrosion. Widely used in shipbuilding, yachts, and marine engineering.
