About pressure ratings: there is no universal "Class 150" rating for aluminum couplings. The working pressure depends on the alloy, temper, wall thickness, size, connection type, temperature and the standard used. ASME B16.52 rates fittings by pipe schedule (40/80/160), not by Class. We confirm the rating for your actual design before production.

Types of Aluminum Couplings

Full Aluminum Coupling

A full coupling has two connection ends of the same size. It joins two pipe ends in a straight line.

Common uses: joining straight pipe sections, connecting pipe to equipment, utility lines, and fabricated aluminum piping.

Half Aluminum Coupling

A half coupling has one connection end. It is used to make a branch outlet from a pipe, tank or equipment wall, without putting a full coupling between two pipes.

Common sizes: 1/2", 3/4", 1" branch outlets. Connection can be threaded or socket-weld.

Reducing Aluminum Coupling

A reducing coupling has two different connection sizes. It connects two pipes of different diameters in one straight fitting.

Common combinations: DN50 x DN40 (2" x 1-1/2"), DN40 x DN32, DN32 x DN25, DN25 x DN20, DN20 x DN15 (3/4" x 1/2"), DN80 x DN50 (3" x 2").

Type Ends What it does
Full coupling Two same-size ends Joins two pipe sections
Half coupling One end Makes a branch outlet on a pipe or tank
Reducing coupling Two different-size ends Joins two pipes of different sizes
Custom coupling Per drawing Special sizes, ports or connections

Types Of Aluminum Couplings

How to Choose

Full coupling – two pipe ends of the same size need to be joined.

Half coupling – you need a single branch outlet from a pipe or tank.

Reducing coupling – two different pipe sizes need to be connected directly.

Reducing Aluminum Coupling Size Combinations

Large end Small end Equivalent NPS
DN50 DN40 2" x 1-1/2"
DN40 DN32 1-1/2" x 1-1/4"
DN32 DN25 1-1/4" x 1"
DN25 DN20 1" x 3/4"
DN20 DN15 3/4" x 1/2"
DN80 DN50 3" x 2"
DN100 DN80 4" x 3"
DN150 DN100 6" x 4"

Larger reducing combinations and non-standard sizes can be made from drawings.

Aluminum Coupling Connection Types

Threaded Aluminum Coupling

Threaded couplings give a removable connection, no welding needed. Thread types we can make: NPT, BSPT, BSPP and metric.

Thread profile, pitch, size and engagement length must match the pipe or fitting they go into. Confirm the thread standard when you order.

Typical uses: low-to-moderate pressure air and water lines, instrument connections, and piping that needs to be taken apart for maintenance.

Socket-Weld Aluminum Coupling

A socket-weld coupling has a machined socket. The pipe goes into the socket and is joined with a fillet weld.

Typical uses: small-diameter piping, instrument lines, process equipment and compact assemblies.

Note: aluminum socket-weld fittings are not common. Welding aluminum needs the right alloy, temper, wall thickness and welding procedure. If your system is welded, tell us the service conditions first.

Butt-Weld Fittings

Butt-weld fittings for aluminum are made to ASTM B361, with dimensions per ASME B16.9. These are usually fittings like elbows, tees and reducers, rather than couplings. We can quote these for welded aluminum piping systems.

Aluminum Alloy Options

Alloy Main points Where it is used
6061 Good strength, good corrosion resistance, machines well The common general-purpose alloy for couplings and fittings
6063 Good corrosion resistance, easy to form Tubes, profiles and light-duty parts
6082 Higher strength than 6063 Structures, frames and equipment that need more strength
5083 High strength, very good corrosion resistance, welds well Marine and coastal work, mostly welded pipe systems
5086 Good corrosion resistance, welds well Marine and general industrial work
1050 Very pure, soft, excellent corrosion resistance Low-stress, corrosion-resistant parts
1060 Very pure, good conductivity and corrosion resistance General-purpose and chemical-compatible parts

Two honest points about alloys: 1) Pure aluminum (1050/1060) is soft. Threads can strip easily, so these alloys are not a good choice for threaded or high-stress connections. 2) 5083 and 5086 are mainly used for welded piping, not threaded fittings. Confirm the connection type before choosing the alloy.

Aluminum Coupling Dimensions (Reference)

The table below lists standard pipe sizes and the SCH40/SCH80 pipe wall values that a coupling would mate with. The SCH values are pipe wall thickness per ASME B36.10/B36.19, not the coupling body wall thickness.

Nominal size NPS Pipe OD (mm) SCH40 wall (mm) SCH80 wall (mm) Coupling length ref (mm)
DN15 1/2" 21.3 2.77 3.73 32
DN20 3/4" 26.7 2.87 3.91 36
DN25 1" 33.4 3.38 4.55 42
DN32 1-1/4" 42.2 3.56 4.85 48
DN40 1-1/2" 48.3 3.68 5.08 52
DN50 2" 60.3 3.91 5.54 60
DN65 2-1/2" 73.0 5.16 7.01 68
DN80 3" 88.9 5.49 7.62 74
DN100 4" 114.3 6.02 8.56 88
DN125 5" 141.3 6.55 9.53 100 (custom)
DN150 6" 168.3 7.11 10.97 112 (custom)
DN200 8" 219.1 8.18 12.70 136 (custom)

Coupling length, socket depth, thread length, bore and wall thickness depend on the fitting type and the standard used. The length values above are reference values only, not a guaranteed dimension. For standard-compliance orders, we confirm final dimensions against the applicable standard or your approved drawing before production.

Aluminum Coupling Standards

Standard What it covers
ASTM B361-16(2024) Factory-made wrought aluminum and aluminum-alloy welding fittings (butt-weld and socket-end parts)

ASME B16.9-2024 Factory-made wrought butt-welding fitting dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing and marking
ASME B16.25-2022 Preparation of butt-welding ends (weld bevels, dimensions, tolerances)

The right standard depends on the coupling type, material, manufacturing process and connection method. We confirm the applicable standard for your order before production.

Applications of Aluminum Couplings

Aluminum couplings are used in pipe systems where the pipe itself is aluminum. Common real-world uses:

Compressed air lines – workshops, garages and factories. Aluminum pipe is light and does not rust, so it is a popular choice for compressed air distribution. Couplings join straight pipe sections and make service points.

Marine piping – boats, ships and coastal facilities. 5083 and 5086 are the usual choice because they weld well and resist salt water.

Handrails and railings – aluminum pipe joined with couplings is a common, simple railing solution for platforms, walkways and loading areas.

Food and beverage plants – some liquids that do not react with aluminum are carried in aluminum pipe. Check compatibility for each product.

Irrigation and low-pressure water lines – where the water chemistry is compatible with aluminum.

General industrial equipment – machine guards, frames, conveyor and utility lines where light weight and no rust matter.

Aluminum is not right for every pipe system. Working pressure, temperature, the liquid inside the pipe and the connection method all affect the choice. If you are not sure whether aluminum fits your job, send us the service conditions and we will advise honestly.
