Not every aluminum elbow is the same alloy. The grade you pick determines weldability, corrosion resistance, and how much pressure the fitting can handle. Below is a straight comparison of the five alloys we stock.

 

6061-T6 Aluminum Elbow

The workhorse. 6061 is the most common aluminum elbow alloy for a reason-it balances strength, weldability, and cost.

The marine-grade option. 5083 has the highest strength of the non-heat-treatable alloys and far better saltwater corrosion resistance than 6061.

6082 Aluminum Elbow

The structural choice. 6082 offers higher strength than 6063 and better load-bearing performance while maintaining good corrosion resistance for industrial and marine environments.

Not all elbows are made the same way. The manufacturing method affects pressure rating, flow characteristics, and what kind of system the fitting belongs in.

Aluminum Buttweld Elbow

Aluminum Buttweld Elbow

Two ends are beveled for direct welding into the pipe run. No threads, no sockets-just a clean weld joint. This is the standard for high-pressure and high-temperature systems.

Pressure rating: Up to Class 300 depending on wall schedule

Typical use: Oil & gas, chemical plants, steam lines, compressed air

Aluminum Seamless Elbow

Formed from a single piece of aluminum-no weld seam anywhere on the body. The grain structure follows the bend, which means uniform wall thickness and no weak point at the weld line.

Pressure rating: Higher than welded equivalents at the same wall thickness

Typical use: Aerospace ground support, high-purity gas lines, critical process piping

Aluminum Long Radius Elbow(LR)

Aluminum Long Radius Elbow (LR)

Centerline radius equals 1.5 × nominal diameter. The gentler turn means less turbulence, lower pressure drop, and less erosion at the bend. Standard in most industrial piping specs.

Aluminum Short Radius Elbow(SR)

Aluminum Short Radius Elbow (SR)

Centerline radius equals 1.0 × nominal diameter. Tight turn-use it where space is tight and flow resistance is less of a concern.

CLR: 1.0D

Typical use: Compact equipment, machinery piping, space-constrained installations

Threaded Elbow

Internal NPT or BSPT threads on both ends. Screws directly onto threaded pipe-no welding required. Popular for smaller-diameter systems where welding isn't practical.

Thread standards: NPT, BSPT, BSPP (specify when ordering)

Typical use: Water lines, low-pressure air systems, maintenance applications

 

Street Elbow

One male end, one female end. Connects a threaded fitting directly to a threaded pipe without a nipple in between. Saves a joint and about 50 mm of space.

Typical use: Tight plumbing runs, equipment connections

 

Reducing Elbow

Different diameters on each port step the pipe size down (or up) while changing direction. Eliminates a separate reducer fitting.

Typical use: Branch connections feeding smaller-diameter lines

Important: Weights are approximate. Actual weight varies with alloy density and manufacturing tolerance. 5083 elbows run slightly lighter than 6061 at the same dimensions due to lower density. Short radius elbows weigh roughly 20–25% less than the LR equivalents listed above.

Non-standard ODs and intermediate wall thicknesses are available on custom order. Common custom requests include DN250 (10″) and DN300 (12″), which we produce regularly.

Anodized elbows are available in 6061 and 6063 only. 5083 can be anodized but develops a slightly yellowish tint - if appearance matters, stick with 6063 for best results.

FAQ

 

Q: Do you make elbows in alloys other than the five listed?

Yes. 5052, 6082, 7075, and 2014 are all available as custom orders. Lead time runs 25–35 days depending on raw material availability. Send us the spec and we'll confirm feasibility.

Q: What's the difference between a butt weld elbow and a seamless elbow?

A butt-weld elbow can have a longitudinal weld seam along the body-it's formed from pipe or plate and welded. A seamless elbow is made from solid billet or drawn tube with no weld seam anywhere. Seamless costs more but has uniform grain structure and no potential weak point at the weld line. For general industrial use, a well-made butt weld elbow is perfectly adequate. For high-cycle fatigue, high-purity, or extreme-pressure service, seamless is the safer bet.

Q: Do aluminum elbows need special welding procedures?

Yes. Use AC TIG with 100% argon shielding gas. The filler rod depends on the elbow alloy:
- 6061 → ER4043 or ER5356 (4043 flows better; 5356 is stronger)
- 5083 → ER5183 or ER5356
- 6063 → ER4043 or ER5356
- 1050/1060 → ER1100 or ER4043
Preheat to 150–200°C for wall thicknesses above 5 mm. Clean off the oxide layer immediately before welding - aluminum oxide melts at 2,000°C while the base metal melts at 660°C, so you cannot weld through it.

Q: SCH40 or SCH80 - how do I decide?

Check your system's design pressure and temperature. As a rough guide: SCH40 is typically rated to Class 150 (around 20 bar at ambient temperature for small diameters). SCH80 is rated to Class 300. If you're unsure, send us the working pressure (bar or psi), media type, and max temperature - we'll tell you which schedule works.
