Product Introduction

A 5083-O aluminum elbow is a butt weld pipe fitting that changes the direction of an aluminum piping run by 45, 90, or 180 degrees. Both ends are beveled and welded directly into the line, giving a permanent, compact, leak tight joint. The 5083-O designation means the fitting is made from aluminum alloy 5083 in the annealed (O) condition, which gives the highest formability of the 5083 tempers.

Why choose 5083-O material?

Aluminum 5083 is a non heat treatable aluminum magnesium alloy. Its principal alloying element is magnesium, with controlled additions of manganese and chromium. Because it is not strengthened by heat treatment, its properties depend mainly on the temper and the amount of work, not on a quench and age cycle.

The O temper is the annealed condition. It has the highest formability among 5083 tempers, which makes it a practical choice where the fitting needs extensive forming or where maximum ductility is preferred over higher strength. Other tempers such as H111, H116, and H321 are available when the project specifies marine service conditions.

The reasons buyers select 5083 for elbow applications are consistent across marine, offshore, and cryogenic work:

Seawater corrosion resistance: 5083 resists corrosion in marine and industrial environments better than most aluminum alloys.

Predictable post weld strength: as a non heat treatable alloy, 5083 keeps most of its strength in the heat affected zone after welding, unlike 6xxx series heat treatable alloys.

Good weldability: it is readily welded by TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) using 5183 or 5356 filler wire.

Low density: at about 2.66 g/cm3, it is roughly one third the weight of carbon steel.

Cryogenic toughness: it stays ductile down to about -196 C (LNG temperature) with no ductile to brittle transition.

Note on pressure: Schedule in aluminum fittings denotes wall thickness, not a pressure class. The service pressure capability of a 5083-O elbow depends on the wall thickness, design temperature, and the applicable piping code.

8" 200 219.1 305
10" 250 273.0 381
12" 300 323.8 457

Short radius elbows follow a 1.0D centerline and are used where space is limited. Custom angles such as 22.5, 30, and 60 degrees can be produced to drawing. Metric diameters and specified wall thicknesses are available subject to tooling and minimum quantity review.

Long radius vs short radius

The long radius elbow has a centerline radius of about 1.5 times the nominal pipe diameter. It gives a smoother flow path with lower pressure loss and less turbulence, so it is the default choice for most piping.

The short radius elbow has a centerline radius of about 1.0 times the nominal pipe diameter. It needs less space and is used in tight layouts, but it produces a sharper change in flow direction. The choice depends on available space, flow velocity, pressure loss, and the project piping specification.

Applications

5083-O aluminum elbows are used wherever a light, corrosion resistant change of direction is needed in a piping system:

Shipbuilding: hull piping, superstructures, decks

Marine piping: cooling water, ballast, bilge, firefighting

Offshore equipment: platforms, modules, risers

Seawater systems: suitable for non stressed or intermittent seawater exposure; H116 or H321 is recommended for continuous direct seawater contact

Cryogenic equipment: LNG tanks and air separation plants, where 5083 keeps toughness at low temperature

Industrial gas and process piping: air separation, gas handling, lightweight process lines

Heat exchangers and custom aluminum pipe spools

Operating temperature is generally about -196 C to +150 C for sustained service. Above 150 C the strength falls progressively, so the design should follow the applicable piping code for derated allowable stress.

Packaging

Aluminum fittings can develop surface oxidation (white rust) if trapped moisture is present during sea freight, so export packaging is built to keep them dry and scratch free:

Each elbow is fitted with plastic bevel protectors

Fittings are wrapped in waterproof plastic film with industrial desiccant packets inside

Outer packing uses ISPM 15 compliant, fumigation free plywood cases or wooden pallets

Labels show alloy, temper, size, heat number, and order reference for traceability

Inspection and testing

Each order is checked before shipment:

Material verification: review of the mill certificate and, where specified, positive material identification (PMI)

Dimensional inspection: outside diameter, wall thickness, center to face, and bevel checked against ASME B16.9

Surface inspection: visual check for cracks, dents, and oxidation

Optional tests: dye penetrant (PT), radiographic (RT) for fabricated welds, hydrostatic test when specified

Documentation: Mill Test Certificate to EN 10204 3.1; third party inspection by SGS, BV, DNV, or an appointed agency available

Frequently asked questions

What standard covers a 5083-O aluminum elbow?

ASTM B361 covers the finished wrought aluminum welding fitting, and ASME B16.9 covers the dimensions. ASTM B241 may specify the seamless pipe used as raw material, but it is not the finished fitting standard.

Is ASTM B241 an elbow standard?

No. ASTM B241 covers aluminum and aluminum alloy seamless pipe and seamless extruded tube. It can specify the raw pipe used to form an elbow, but the finished fitting is covered by ASTM B361.

What is the difference between long radius and short radius elbows?

A long radius elbow has a centerline radius of about 1.5 times the pipe diameter and gives smoother flow. A short radius elbow has a radius of about 1.0 times the diameter and saves space but turns the flow more sharply.

Which temper should I choose for marine service?

5083-O is a good general choice with high formability. For continuous direct seawater exposure, tempers H116 or H321 are usually specified because they include corrosion resistance requirements for marine service.

Is 5083-O suitable for cryogenic service?

Yes. 5083 keeps its ductility at low temperature with no ductile to brittle transition, so it is used in LNG and air separation systems down to about -196 C.

Can I order several sizes in one shipment?

Yes. GNEE supports combined orders of multiple sizes, angles, wall thicknesses, and tempers, with MOQ based on the total order quantity and sizes.

What documents come with the order?

A Mill Test Certificate to EN 10204 3.1 is provided per heat. Third party inspection by SGS, BV, or DNV can be arranged on request.
