Product Introduction

What Is an Aluminum Slip-On Flange?

An aluminum slip-on flange is a pipe flange that slides over the pipe end and is fixed with two fillet welds - one on the outside of the pipe, one on the inside face of the flange. It is a low-cost, easy-to-install connection for low- and medium-pressure piping.

GNEE supplies aluminum slip-on flanges made of 6061-T6 aluminum per ASTM B247, machined to ASME B16.5 dimensions, in Class 150 and Class 300.

Why Choose Aluminum Slip-On Flanges

  • Lightweight. Aluminum is roughly one third the density of steel. This cuts handling time on site, shipping cost and installation labor.
  • Corrosion resistance. Aluminum forms a natural oxide layer. 6061-T6 works well in fresh water, marine air and many non-aggressive environments.
  • Easy to install. The flange slips over the pipe, so alignment is simple. No precise butt-weld end prep is needed.
  • Weldable and machinable. 6061-T6 can be welded and machined with standard methods, which makes on-site adjustments easier.
  • Cost-effective for the right service. For water, air and utility lines, aluminum flanges often cost less than stainless steel and need no coating to stay rust-free.

Honest notes: aluminum flanges are not a general replacement for steel flanges. Do not connect them directly to copper or galvanized steel pipe without isolation, and confirm the pressure rating for your operating temperature before ordering.

FAQ

Q1. What is an aluminum slip-on flange?

An aluminum slip-on flange is a pipe flange that slides over the pipe end and is fixed with two fillet welds. It is used to connect pipes, valves and equipment in low- and medium-pressure systems.

Q2. What is the difference between a slip-on flange and a weld-neck flange?

A slip-on flange is welded with two fillet welds and needs no pipe end prep, so it is cheaper and easier to install. A weld-neck flange uses one full-penetration butt weld, gives better strength under high pressure and fatigue, and costs more. Slip-on is the common choice for water, air and utility lines.

Q3. What aluminum alloy do you use?

Standard material is 6061-T6 per ASTM B247. On request we also supply 5083, 3003 and 6063. 6061-T6 is the most common grade for flanges because it welds and machines well and has good corrosion resistance.

Q4. Can I use an aluminum flange with a steel pipe?

Yes, but not directly with copper or galvanized steel pipe. When aluminum touches copper or galvanized steel in wet conditions, galvanic corrosion can occur. Use an isolation gasket and isolating bolt sleeves, or ask us for the correct setup for your job.

Q5. What pressure rating can an aluminum slip-on flange take?

We supply Class 150 and Class 300 flanges. The real allowable pressure depends on the alloy, the operating temperature and the joint design. For 6061-T6 flanges, ratings are given under ASME B31.3 Appendix L. Send us your media, temperature and pressure, and we will confirm the correct class.

Q6. How is a slip-on flange welded?

The flange slides over the pipe, then two fillet welds are made - one on the outside of the pipe and one on the inside face of the flange. No beveling or special pipe end prep is needed.

Q7. What surface finish can I choose?

Standard is mill finish. Options: clear anodized, black anodized, or powder coating. Anodizing adds a hard protective layer, which helps in outdoor or humid conditions.

Q8. Do you provide test certificates?

Yes. Material test certificates and dimensional reports are available on request. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV or your nominated agency can also be arranged.
