Product Introduction

What is 1060 Aluminum Elbow

A 1060 aluminum elbow is a butt-weld pipe fitting that changes the direction of flow in an aluminum piping system. The fitting is made from EN AW-1060, a commercially pure aluminum grade with a minimum aluminum content of 99.6%. In the Aluminum Association 1xxx series, 1060 sits at the high-purity end: it carries almost no alloying elements, so its behaviour is dominated by the properties of aluminum itself.

As a 1xxx grade, 1060 trades strength for purity, keeping impurities trace-level so conductivity and formability stay maximal - a specialist part for conductive, corrosive or low-pressure runs, not a structural fitting. The 1060-O aluminum elbow (annealed temper) is the softest and most formable variant, preferred where the elbow must be bent or welded in the field.

Because 1060 is essentially pure aluminum, it is selected where chemistry, not strength, drives the design. Typical reasons to specify 1060 elbows for chemical processing and other duties:

Corrosion resistance - the high-purity matrix forms a dense, self-healing oxide film that resists atmospheric, fresh-water and many chemical environments.

Conductivity - about 61% IACS electrical conductivity, the highest among common aluminum fitting grades, makes it suitable for busbar and earthing runs.

Formability and weldability - soft O-temper 1060 bends, spins and welds easily with low risk of cracking.

Low cost - pure aluminum is cheaper per kilogram than alloyed grades such as 3003, 5052 or 6061.

The trade-off is low mechanical strength. 1060 elbows are not for high-pressure or load-bearing structural runs; for those, 6061-T6 or 5083 is the correct choice. 1060 is a non-heat-treatable alloy: strength comes only from cold working (H tempers) or the soft annealed state (O temper).

Chemical Composition of 1060 Aluminum Elbow

The table below lists the composition of 1060 per ASTM B209 / EN 573-3 limits (weight percent). Values are maxima unless stated as a minimum.

Element Min % Max % Role / Function
Aluminum (Al) 99.60 - Base metal; provides conductivity, corrosion resistance and light weight.
Silicon (Si) - 0.25 Trace impurity; kept low to preserve purity and oxide-film quality.
Iron (Fe) - 0.35 Primary impurity from production; limited to avoid hard intermetallics.
Copper (Cu) - 0.05 Trace; slightly lowers conductivity if present.
Manganese (Mn) - 0.03 Trace; not added intentionally in 1060.
Magnesium (Mg) - 0.03 Trace; would otherwise enable strengthening (not used here).
Zinc (Zn) - 0.05 Trace impurity.
Titanium (Ti) - 0.03 Trace; minor grain-refining effect.
Others, each - 0.03 Individual residual-element limit.
Others, total - 0.10 Combined residual-element limit.

Mechanical Properties

The table gives typical room-temperature values for 1060 by temper. Because 1060 is non-heat-treatable, the temper is defined by cold-work (H) or annealing (O), not by heat treatment. Values vary with product form and thickness; the MTC defines the delivered lot.

Temper UTS MPa Yield MPa (0.2% offset) Elongation % Hardness (HV, approx.)
O (annealed) 60–95 15–35 25–40 20–30
H12 (quarter-hard) 75–110 50–70 10–15 30–40
H14 (half-hard) 85–120 70–90 6–12 35–45
H16 (three-quarter-hard) 95–130 80–100 4–8 40–50

Heat Treatment & Temper Guide

1060 is non-heat-treatable. It has no T tempers and cannot be strengthened by solution heat treatment and aging (the 530±5 °C / 175±5 °C × 8 h route used for 6061/6063 does not apply). The temper is set entirely by cold working and annealing:

O (annealed) - fully softened by heating then slow cooling (typical anneal ≈ 345 °C / 650 °F, hold then furnace-cool; exact cycle depends on thickness). Maximum ductility, best for bending, spinning and welding.

H1x (strain-hardened only) - cold-worked without subsequent thermal treatment. Strength rises with cold-work: H12 → H14 → H16 → H18 (full-hard). Formability falls as strength rises.

H2x (strain-hardened and partially annealed) - cold-worked then partially annealed, giving strength between H1x and O with improved stability (e.g. H24, H26).

H112 (as-fabricated) - hot-worked or thermally untreated condition for plates and heavier sections.

For elbows, O and H14 are the most common supply tempers: O for maximum formability and weldability, H14 where a stiffer wall is wanted without sacrificing too much bendability. Because 1060 cannot be age-hardened, specify the final temper at order time - it cannot be changed later by heat treatment. Selection guide: choose O when the elbow must be bent or welded in the field; choose H14 when the wall needs to hold shape under handling and modest pressure; avoid H18 for any application that requires on-site forming, as the full-hard condition cracks readily under bending.

Corrosion Resistance

With 99.6% aluminum, 1060 forms a continuous, adherent Al₂O₃ film that gives strong all-round corrosion resistance. Performance by environment:

Atmospheric - excellent in rural, urban and most industrial air; very low general corrosion. Slightly less robust than 5xxx in severe marine atmospheres.

Marine / salt water - good in splash and atmospheric zones, but pitting can occur in long-term immersed conditions; 5083 or 5052 is preferred for immersed marine structure.

Galvanic - aluminum is anodic to steel, copper and stainless steel. Isolate 1060 from noble metals (e.g. with dielectric gaskets) to avoid accelerated galvanic attack.

Stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) - not a concern for 1060; pure aluminum is immune to SCC in the normal sense.

Chemical / finish - resists many acids (dilute nitric, acetic), alkalis and food media, but is attacked by strong caustics and some halogenated chemicals. Anodizing or coating further improves chemical stability.

Regular cleaning to remove deposits extends service life. Where the environment is highly aggressive, pair 1060 with an anodized or coated finish rather than bare mill stock, since a maintained surface film is what gives pure aluminum its durability.

Fabrication

Welding. 1060 welds readily by TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW) and resistance processes. Recommended filler wires:

ER1100 - pure-aluminum wire, matches 1060 chemistry and gives the best corrosion match for pure-aluminum service.

ER4043 - common, crack-resistant silicon wire for general aluminum welding; slightly lower color match after anodizing.

ER5356 - magnesium wire for higher joint strength where needed, but it can reduce post-anodize color uniformity and is rarely required for pure-aluminum runs.

Pre-clean the joint to remove oxide and grease; use AC TIG with argon shielding. Because 1060 is soft, avoid excessive clamping force that distorts the thin wall.

Machining. 1060 machines poorly in the sticky sense - it tends to build up on the tool and produce a poor finish, especially in O temper. Use sharp tools, positive rake, generous coolant and higher cutting speeds with light feeds. H14/H18 tempers machine better than O.

Formability. Excellent in O temper; 1060 bends, spins, deep-draws and flares with minimal springback. Formability drops through the H series, so bend radii should be opened up as temper hardens.

Surface Finishes

Finish Description Typical use for 1060 elbow
Mill finish Natural as-rolled/as-formed surface, slight oxide sheen. Default for chemical, water and general corrosion service.
Anodized Controlled oxide layer (clear or colored), 10–25 µm typical. Decorative and light-wear applications; 1060 anodizes evenly due to low impurities.
Powder coated Polymer coating for color and extra protection. Architectural and visible runs.
PVDF coated Fluoropolymer topcoat with high weatherability. Exterior architectural facade pipework.
Polished / bright Mechanical or chemical polish to a reflective surface. Decorative trim and display piping.

FAQ

What is the difference between 1060 and 6061 aluminum elbow?

1060 is a commercially pure, non-heat-treatable aluminum (99.6% Al) with high conductivity and excellent corrosion resistance but low strength. 6061 is a heat-treatable Al-Mg-Si alloy (T6) with much higher strength for structural load but lower conductivity. Choose 1060 for conductive, corrosive or low-pressure service; choose 6061-T6 where strength governs.

Can 1060 aluminum elbow be heat treated for higher strength?

No. 1060 is non-heat-treatable. Strength is controlled only by cold working (H12/H14/H16/H18 tempers) or annealing (O temper). There are no T tempers for 1060.

Which welding wire is recommended for 1060 aluminum elbow?

For fusion welding of 1060, use ER1100 or ER4043 filler. ER5356 may be used when higher joint strength is required, but it slightly reduces corrosion uniformity and is rarely needed for pure-aluminum service.

What pressure rating applies to 1060 aluminum elbow?

1060 elbows are generally specified for low-pressure and non-critical corrosion-resistant service. Wall schedule (e.g. SCH 5S to SCH 40S) and the governing piping code determine the allowable pressure. Confirm the design pressure with GNEE against your service condition.

Is a material test certificate supplied?

Yes. GNEE supplies an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate (MTC) with each lot, covering chemical composition and mechanical properties of the delivered temper.

Can 1060 aluminum elbow be used for potable water and food contact?

Yes. 1060 is a non-toxic, commercially pure aluminum that is widely used in food, pharmaceutical, potable-water and ultra-pure water systems. It does not impart taste or metallic leach and resists fresh-water corrosion, which suits hygienic and sanitary piping designs.

Which standards apply to a 1060 aluminum elbow?

Material is supplied to ASTM B361 (WP1060 designation); dimensions follow ASME B16.9 for butt-weld fittings (pipe sizes and schedules per ASME B36.10M). DIN 2605 and EN equivalents are available on request. As a non-heat-treatable grade, 1060 is supplied in O, H12, H14, H16, H18 or H112 temper.
