Complete Guide of 3003-H18 Aluminum Sheet

When industrial buyers look for a rust-proof, high-strength raw material that doesn't require expensive heat treatments, the 3003-H18 aluminum sheet is almost always on the shortlist. At GNEE, we supply this specific material to manufacturers worldwide.
In this deep-dive guide, we will break down the true technical specs of 3003-H18, compare it to other tempers, and show you exactly what to look for when placing a bulk order.

What is a 3003-H18 Aluminum Sheet?

To understand this material, we need to break it down into two parts: the alloy grade (3003) and the temper (H18).

The 3003 alloy belongs to the 3000 series, which uses manganese (Mn) as its primary alloying element. The addition of roughly 1.0% to 1.5% manganese makes 3003 about 20% stronger than pure 1100 series aluminum while retaining excellent corrosion resistance.

The "H18" designation tells you exactly how the metal was processed at the mill. "H" stands for strain-hardened (cold-worked). The first digit "1" means the metal was only strain-hardened without any subsequent thermal treatment (like annealing). The second digit "8" indicates the degree of hardening. On a scale of 1 to 8, an "8" means it is "full hard." This is achieved by cold rolling the aluminum at room temperature until its thickness is significantly reduced, tightly packing its grain structure to maximize tensile strength.

Chemical Composition of 3003 Aluminum Plate

Before we talk about performance, let's look at the basic building blocks. At GNEE, our production strictly adheres to international standards like ASTM B209. For a 3003 aluminum plate to be certified, its chemical composition must strictly fall within the following parameters.

Element Symbol Percentage (%) Role in the Alloy
Aluminum Al Balance (approx. 96.8 - 99.0) Base metal
Manganese Mn 1.0 - 1.5 Increases strength over pure aluminum
Iron Fe 0.7 max Impurity control affects formability
Silicon Si 0.6 max Naturally occurring, kept under tight limits
Copper Cu 0.05 - 0.20 Adds a slight strength boost
Zinc Zn 0.10 max Controlled to prevent corrosion issues
Others (Total) - 0.15 max Strict mill control

Note: The precise control of Iron and Silicon is what allows GNEE to guarantee consistent rolling without surface cracking.

Mechanical Properties of 3003-H18 Aluminum Coil

When engineers specify 3003-H18 aluminum coil or sheet, they are doing so because they need rigidity. Because it is fully hard, it sacrifices some bending ability (ductility) for maximum structural stiffness.

Here are the typical mechanical values you will see on our Mill Test Certificates (MTC):

Property Value What it means for your production
Tensile Strength 185 - 265 MPa (27,000 - 38,000 psi) The maximum stress the sheet can take before breaking. High for a non-heat-treatable alloy.
Yield Strength 165 MPa min (24,000 psi min) The point at which the metal bends and won't snap back to its original flat shape.
Elongation 1% to 4% (depending on thickness) Very low. This means you cannot do deep drawing or sharp 90-degree bends without cracking.
Hardness (Brinell) Approx. 55 HB Resists surface dents and scratches better than O (annealed) temper.

3003-H18 vs. 3003-H14 Aluminum Sheet: Which to Choose?

Buyers frequently ask me whether they should buy H14 (half hard) or H18 (full hard). The decision comes down to your fabrication process.

  • Choose 3003-H18 if your end product is mostly flat, requires maximum rigidity, and will not undergo severe bending. It is perfect for flat paneling, rigid baffles, and simple roll-formed profiles.

  • Choose the 3003-H14 Aluminum Sheet if you need to bend the metal. H14 has better elongation (around 8-16%), allowing it to be bent into 90-degree angles for boxes, brackets, or complex HVAC ductwork without fracturing the outer radius.

Do not try to deep-draw an H18 sheet. The low elongation will cause the metal to tear in your press machine. Know your tooling before you order.

Uses for 3003-H18 Aluminum Sheet

Because 3003-H18 offers a great balance of cost, corrosion resistance, and high stiffness, it is heavily utilized in several specific industrial applications. We don't talk about theoretical uses; here is where our clients actually use this bulk 3003 aluminum plate supplier's material:
1. HVAC Insulation Jacketing
Industrial pipes carrying hot steam or cold refrigerants are wrapped in insulation. To protect this insulation from weather, birds, and mechanical damage, contractors wrap them in a 3003-H18 bare aluminum sheet. The H18 full-hard temper is crucial here because the jacket needs to resist denting from minor impacts and hold its rigid cylindrical shape without sagging over long pipe runs.
2. Standard License Plates
Automotive license plates require a material that is flat, rigid, and won't rust when exposed to road salt and rain. The 3003-H18 temper provides the stiffness needed so the plate doesn't bend easily in the wind or from minor bumps. The surface is also excellent for accepting reflective vinyl films.
3. Simple Food Pan Lids and Containers
While deep food trays require a softer temper (like O or H22), flat food container lids or rigid, shallow baking sheets often utilize 3003-H18. Aluminum is non-toxic, and the natural oxide layer prevents the metal from reacting with slightly acidic foods. The H18 temper ensures the lid doesn't warp when exposed to oven heat.
4. Roofing and Siding Panels
In agricultural or industrial construction, corrugated or flat roofing relies on 3003-H18. The manganese content ensures it survives decades of rain without rusting, and the full-hard temper allows it to bear wind loads and light snow loads without buckling between purlins.

Cost Analysis of 3003-H18 Aluminum Roofing Sheet

In the aluminum trade, you are not buying off the shelf; pricing is dynamic.
At GNEE, the price you pay for custom 3003-H18 aluminum coil or sheet is calculated using a simple formula:
Current SME (Shanghai Metal Exchange) Aluminum Ingot Price + Mill Fabrication Fee + Freight.

Why is 3003-H18 considered a cost-effective choice?

  • No Heat Treatment Cost: Unlike 6000-series alloys (like 6061-T6) that require expensive time in aging ovens, H18 is hardened purely through the physical pressure of the cold rolling mill. This saves massive amounts of energy, and we pass those savings directly to the buyer.
  • High Scrap Value: Aluminum is 100% recyclable. Offcuts from your production line can be sold back to scrap dealers at a high percentage of the original raw material cost, lowering your net project expense.
  • Weight Savings: Aluminum is one-third the weight of steel. Even if the price per kilogram is higher than galvanized steel, you get three times as many square meters of sheet per ton.

GNEE Quality Check and Packaging for 3003-H18 Aluminum plate

A competitive price means nothing if the material arrives at your port ruined by moisture or scratched beyond use.
When you order from GNEE as your bulk aluminum supplier, we implement strict quality controls:

  • Surface Inspection: We ensure the surface is free from rolling oil stains, dark spots, scratches, or corrosion marks.
  • Thickness Tolerance: Mill rolls can wander. We maintain strict thickness tolerances according to ASTM B209, ensuring your stamping machines don't jam due to over-thickness.
  • Export-Grade Packaging: Aluminum is highly susceptible to "white rust" (water staining) if condensation forms inside a shipping container. We wrap our sheets in heavy-duty waterproof kraft paper, encapsulate them in plastic film with generous amounts of desiccant (silica gel), and band them securely to fumigated wooden pallets.
