Aluminum Buttweld Elbow Vs Threaded Elbow

An aluminum elbow changes the direction of an aluminum pipe. You can order it with butt-weld ends or threaded ends. Which one fits your job depends on how the pipe is connected, not on the elbow alone.

Standards

  • ASME B16.9 is the dimension standard for buttwelding fittings. It covers dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing and marking for sizes NPS 1/2 to 48 (DN15 to DN1200).
  • ASTM B361 is the material standard for factory-made wrought aluminum welding fittings.
  • ASME B16.52 covers forged nonferrous fittings (including aluminum) with threaded or socket-weld ends.

One point to check: B16.52 applies to forged fittings. If a threaded elbow is machined from bar instead of forged, B16.52 does not apply to it. Ask your supplier which production method is used before you order to B16.52.

 

Buttweld Aluminum Elbow

A buttweld elbow has welding ends. The elbow is aligned with the pipe and welded on site, which makes one continuous pipe run. Common options are 45° and 90° angles, long radius (LR) and short radius (SR).

Choose it when the piping is designed around welded joints and the fitting will stay in place for the life of the system.

 

Threaded Aluminum Elbow

A threaded elbow connects to the pipe, a nipple, a valve or an equipment port through matching threads. No welding is needed on site.

Always state the thread standard when ordering. A 1" NPT thread will not seal correctly in a 1" BSP port, even though the nominal size looks the same.

Installation and Maintenance

Buttweld: prepare and clean the surfaces, align the pipe and elbow, weld with the right procedure, then inspect the joint. If the elbow ever needs to be replaced, the pipe is cut and a new weld is made.

Threaded: wrap the thread with tape or apply sealant, then tighten. To remove it, unscrew it. This is convenient when the connection is reachable and the system allows it.

Ease of installation is only one factor. If the piping spec says welded joints, a buttweld elbow is the right choice even though it takes more work to install.

 

Aluminum Alloys

6061 / 6082 - the normal choice for general industrial and structural piping.

5083 / 5086 - for marine and seawater lines, with good corrosion resistance and weldability. These are buttweld alloys; 5xxx series is rarely threaded because it does not machine well for threads.

6063 - often used for threaded fittings and light structural work because it machines well.

For 6061-T6 and other heat-treatable alloys, welding softens the heat-affected zone compared with the original T6 temper. This is normal for aluminum. For high-pressure or high-temperature lines, have the joint design checked by the pipework engineer.

 

Pressure

There is no universal rule that a buttweld elbow always handles more pressure than a threaded elbow. The actual capability depends on the material, size, wall thickness, temperature, connection design, thread specification or welding procedure, and the piping code that applies.

For pressure piping, select the fitting against the applicable code and the full piping design, not by connection type alone.

 

Cost

The fitting price is not the whole cost.

Buttweld adds welding equipment, consumables, surface preparation, labor, inspection and possibly NDT. Threaded avoids welding but adds sealing materials, and the connection quality depends on how well it is made up.

For a project, compare the total installed cost, not just the fitting price. On large permanent systems the welded option is usually chosen for the joint quality; on small service lines the threaded option is usually the practical one.

Q: Is a butt-weld elbow stronger than a threaded elbow?

A: There is no universal answer. Strength and pressure capability depend on material, size, wall thickness, temperature, connection design, welding procedure or thread specification, and the applicable piping code.

Q: Can I connect an NPT elbow to a BSP pipe?

A: No. NPT and BSP have different thread angles and profiles and are not interchangeable, even when the nominal sizes look the same.

Q: Can a 6061-T6 pipe be welded to an aluminum buttweld elbow?

A: Yes, with the right joint design and welding procedure. Remember that welding softens the heat-affected zone of 6061-T6, so the welded joint is not as strong as the original T6 material.

Q: Which is easier to install?
